A.K.A.I. Open in Cork

The A.K.A.I. Open was held in the Cork Institute of Technology on Sunday 28th June. Over 500 competitors took part. 25 Students from Waterford Martial Arts attended the competition and won in total 11 Gold, 6 Silver and 5 Bronze medals.

In Kickboxing Adam Wall won Gold in a very difficult section and Adam O’Connor was unlucky to lose out by just one point. Derek Cullen also had a fantastic win in the Men’s Novice Section while Rebecca Whelan did very well on her first outing.

WMA athletes totally dominated the Weapons and Form Sections with Stephen O’Shea winning 3 Gold’s and JJ Battell and Lee Rock winning 2 Gold’s each. Leanne Burke and Colm Burke both also took Gold in the Weapons Section while Jordan Kelly, Aya Mustafa, Jack Caples and John O’Shea picked up multiple Silver and Bronze Medals.

Waterford Martial Arts wins 4 Golds at Senior Nationals

The A.K.A.I. ( All Styles Kick Boxing Association of Ireland ) held the Senior National Championships on 19Th April in Carrickmacross.

Waterford Martial Arts was represented by 4 students, brother’s Stephen and John O’Shea , Leanne Burke and Lee Rock in the Championships.

Leanne Burke received Gold in the Senior Woman’s Weapon Division, Lee Rock won the Hard Forms (Kata) Division and brothers, John O’Shea , Gold for Senior Weapons and Stephen O’Shea , Gold for Kung Fu Forms Division.

John McGrath , Chief Instructor of WATERFORD MARTIAL ARTS is extremely proud to have 4 of his students winning their Divisions and they will be going on to represent Ireland in the Senior World Championships in November which are being held in Marseilles, France.

These student’s have won Senior titles at ages 16 and 17. This shows that the training systems that Waterford Martial Arts have put in place over the past 3 years are now bearing fruit. Our next goal is to perform just as well in the Junior National Championships.

John Mc Grath represented Ireland in both Rowing and Kick Boxing and is pleased to see the benefits of months of training and encouragement that 4 students will be representing IRELAND at such a prestigious event.

Pat Evans recieves his Black Belt in Ultimate Kickboxing

Pat Evans receives his Black Belt in Ultimate Kickboxing at Waterford Martial Arts. Pictured from left are Sensei John McGrath, Pat Evans, Grand Master Massan Ghorbani, John Fitzgerald and in front Pat’s son Robbie Evans. Robbie also trains with Waterford Martial Arts in the Tigers, 4 - 6 year old class.

Pat underwent a 5 hour grading testing both skill and endurance on Wednesday December 3rd after which Sensei McGrath was proud to award his Black Belt. Pat is the Manager of Waterford Martial Arts, Riverstown Business Park, Tramore.

He is also a founder member of Blackwater Basket Ball club where he coached for 10 years before moving to Waterford Martial Arts full time. Pat’s grading was witnessed by his family and friends as well as his extended Waterford Martial Arts Family, to all of whom he is eternally grateful for the support and encouragement given to him on the night and in return, we are privileged to have been part of this momentous occasion.

AKAI Competition

Pictured are members of Waterford Martial Arts who competed in the A.K.A.I Open on Sunday 28th October at the ASLAA Sports Complex, Dublin.

Sensei John McGrath, Mr. Pat Evans and Mr. John Fitzgerald took 1st place in the Senior Self Defence Category. Jan Waszkiewicz and Ray Wall took 1st and 2nd place respectively in the Mens Novice Light Contact +85kg category. Jan also competed in Men’s Advanced Light Contact +85kg and took 3rd Place.

In the Novice Men’s Light Contact -85kg category Alan Brett took 2nd place. Adem Mirzza fought very well in his competition début in Light Contact Novice men’s -75kg. Oliver Garduce competed in Novice Men’s -65kg and took 3rd place. Pat Evans brought home a bronze medal from the Men’s Advanced -85kg Light Contact category.

Juniors Danielle Bohill and Leanne Burke competed in the Light Contact Girls Novice +60kg category and took 1st and 2nd place respectively. They also competed in Light Contact Girls Advanced +60kg where they received joint 3rd place.

Daniel Brink fought very well in U10 Novice Boy’s Semi Contact, and Daniel together with Bobby Tweedy also competed in the Junior Forms section where they both performed particularly well.

Carlo Jacobs took 2nd place and Oliver Garduce 3rd place in the Senior Advanced Forms category.

In the Junior weapons category, JJ Battell received 3rd place for his skilful nunchauka display and Lee Rock gave an superb performance with his Bow Staff.

In the Senior Weapons Category, Oliver Garduce received 2nd place for his Kombatan Form and Carlo Jacobs took 3rd place for his Sai Form.

It was a very successful outing for Waterford Martial Arts and the event was greatly enjoyed by the competitors and indeed the many friends and family who travelled to support them.
